Webinar Wednesday: Free the Vote!

June 10, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
  • This event has passed.

Join us on June 10th for another round of our Webinar Wednesdays, where we bring you educational conversations led by impacted people or people working within the movement for abolition.

This webinar is all about the FREE THE VOTE campaign! This campaign is centered around passing Assembly Constitutional Amendment (ACA) 6, or the Free The Vote Act, which will amend the California Constitution and Elections Code to make sure that Californians serving a period of parole can fully participate in our democracy by restoring their right to vote. Nearly 50,000 Californians on parole pay taxes at the local, state, and federal levels. However, they are not able to vote at any level of government. This system operates as “taxation without representation,” which is antithetical to the founding of this country.

Leading us in discussion for this webinar are three formerly incarcerated leaders and members of Initiate Justice: Betty McKay, Richard Mireles, and Michael Ortega.

Betty McKay is a Formerly Incarcerated woman and a graduate of our Institute of Impacted Leaders. She is currently an Organizing Fellow with Essie Justice Group, where she is working on the #FreeBlackMamas campaign – a campaign focused on providing bail for incarcerated, Black mothers. She is also a member of the Sister Warriors Coalition.

Richard Mireles was one of the first Inside Organizers for Initiate Justice while he was serving a 25 years-to-life term in prison. He was found suitable for parole and released on March 20th, 2019, after serving nearly 21 years. On his 12th day out of prison, he testified before the California Assembly’s Public Safety Committee in support of AB 965, which went on to pass that year, and represented Initiate Justice at a press conference in the Capitol in support of ACA 6. He now serves on our Board of Directors.

Michael Ortega is Formerly Incarcerated, an Initiate Justice graduate, Vice President of Transitioning Minds club for formerly incarcerated and system impacted students at Riverside Community College. He is currently employed at a Dual diagnosis residential drug and alcohol treatment center. Michael is also in the process of finalizing his own non-profit that will work with children grades 3-8, and a LLC that will provide transportation to residents in drug treatment centers.
