THE INSTITUTE OF IMPACTED LEADERS

Spring 2020 Institutes: Put on Pause

*At this time, we have decided to put all of our events in the upcoming weeks ON PAUSE, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.*

We were excited to begin our 2020 Spring cohorts of the Institute of Impacted Leaders in early March. Both the Sacramento and Inland Empire Institutes kicked off on a great start with high turnout!

As we love to see our movement grow, we want to be mindful of those around us and prioritize the health of our communities throughout California. Therefore, we are following suggestions by the Center for Disease Control and CA Governor Newsom, to NOT congregate in larger group settings. This means that the Institute weekly sessions will *NOT* be continuing until further notice.

If you are a participant of the Institute:

You should have already been notified about the impacted schedule. Look out for emails in the upcoming weeks regarding the continuation of the Institute program. As you await updates, please consider that we are taking in information as fast as we are receiving it and will only proceed with weekly meetings should the virus show significantly less impact on our communities.

Stay calm and stay safe through these times of social distancing. We encourage all of our IJ family and supporters to remain healthy and be kind to one another.

We will see you soon!

About the Institute of Impacted Leaders

0 Outside Organizers Trained

Initiate Justice’s Institute of Impacted Leaders is a 12-week organizing training program designed for people directly impacted by mass incarceration.

Participants learn about community organizing, how the policy process works in California, how to change statewide laws, and how to advocate for themselves and their loved ones in prison.

Practical activities include an advocacy day at the California State Capitol and in-district advocacy visits. Institute participants and graduates develop campaigns to win freedom and safety for all. All materials and travel are paid for by Initiate Justice, and graduates receive a $500 stipend upon completion.

After the program, graduates of the Institute take the skills they learn and go into state prisons to train our Inside Organizers. They also become Outside Organizers who help lead our work through our member action committees.
